Senate Rejects Rumors of Akpabio Removal Plot

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday dismissed claims of an alleged plan to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the reports as false and misleading. Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, addressed the rumors during plenary in Abuja, emphasizing that no discussions or attempts to oust the Senate President had occurred.

Leadership Stresses Legislative Priorities

Bamidele reassured lawmakers and the public that the chamber remains united and committed to key national issues. “Our focus is on urgent matters of public importance, and we will not allow distractions to derail our work,” he said. He added that the rumors were designed to sow confusion among senators.

Orji Uzor Kalu Refutes Claims

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia-North), a former governor of Abia State, also denied any plot to remove Akpabio. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Kalu said, “Even if there were discussions, they would not succeed. We are a unified body, and removing the Senate President is not on our agenda.” He further noted that minor disagreements among senators are resolved internally without affecting leadership positions.

Managing Internal Disputes

While lawmakers occasionally disagree on matters such as committee participation, project allocations, and budget oversight, efforts to remove presiding officers are rare. Any attempt would require two-thirds support of all 109 senators, along with executive endorsement, making it highly unlikely.

Senate Remains Focused

Bamidele reiterated that the Senate continues to prioritize its legislative responsibilities and public service. Internal disputes are handled behind closed doors, ensuring the chamber’s work on national issues remains uninterrupted.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Senate firmly denies any anti-Akpabio plot. Lawmakers emphasize unity, stability, and commitment to their legislative duties, demonstrating that the chamber remains focused on governance rather than internal power struggles.
