INEC Rejects Letters from Anyanwu-Led PDP Faction

The Independent National Electoral Commission rejected a letter from the Samuel Anyanwu-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party on November 10, 2025. Officials signed the response and addressed it to the party’s national secretary. The letter sought to postpone the Ekiti State governorship primary set for November 8.

However INEC declared the submission invalid. They emphasized that it failed to meet key legal standards.

Background of the Crisis

The PDP faces deep internal divisions. Samuel Anyanwu leads one faction, with Abdulrahaman Mohammed acting as chairman. This group wrote the letter on November 6, citing logistical issues for the delay.

Moreover another faction under Kabiru Turaki claims legitimacy. The party held a national convention on November 15, where members elected Turaki as chairman and expelled rivals like Anyanwu and Mohammed for anti party activities.

Reasons for Rejection

INEC cited non-compliance with the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. The rules require the national chairman and secretary to jointly sign such notices. The faction’s letter lacked this proper endorsement.

Additionally the commission nullified Mohammed’s role as acting chairman. They stressed adherence to the Electoral Act.

Implications for the PDP

This decision deepens the party’s crisis. The Ekiti primary proceeded as planned, with Dr. Wole Oluyede won 279 votes. Families and supporters now question leadership validity.

Furthermore INEC’s stance supports the Turaki-led group as the true authority. It prevents further disruptions to electoral processes.

Future Outlook

The PDP must also deal with its factions to make opposition politics stronger. Nevertheless this development brings to fore the need for opposition unity. Nigerians are closely observing what is happening to this opposition party. This development is conducive to free elections, said INEC’s action.
