Senate Confirms Ayo Omidiran as FCC Executive Chairman

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Mrs. Ayo Omidiran as Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC). Additionally, it approved 37 commissioners representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This marks a major step toward strengthening federal oversight.

Screening Report Highlights No Issues

Sen. Allwell Onyesoh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, presented the screening report. He stated that all nominees submitted required documents and underwent thorough scrutiny. Importantly, no criminal petitions emerged against any nominee.

Onyesoh explained that all nominees appeared before the committee on November 13. They provided CCB clearances, police reports, DSS vetting documents, and their curriculum vitae. Consequently, the committee found them qualified for consideration.

Senate Moves to Committee of the Whole

Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, proposed dissolving the Senate into the Committee of the Whole to review the nominees individually. Meanwhile, Deputy Minority Leader, Sen. Olalere Oyewumi, highlighted the nominees’ local and international experience. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for nominating highly qualified candidates.

Nominees Confirmed Unanimously

After careful consideration, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for a voice vote. As a result, Omidiran and all 37 commissioners were unanimously confirmed to serve at the FCC. The approval ensures the commission can begin its work immediately, promoting equity and representation across Nigeria.
