Former Governor of Anambra State and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, narrowly escaped an attack on Wednesday. Unknown gunmen targeted his convoy along Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s media aide, confirmed the incident on Thursday. He explained that Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy when attackers struck. However, gunmen opened fire on the pilot vehicle, injuring a police officer. The assailants, reportedly dressed in police and military uniforms, stole the officer’s rifle and uniform.
Civilians Hit During Attack
Tragically, attackers fatally shot a young woman recording the event. A nearby shop owner also sustained bullet injuries and underwent surgery to remove lodged bullets. Both he and the police officer are now recovering.
Chukwuelobe said, “The pilot car took heavy fire. No policeman died, and both the escort leader and wounded shop owner are responding to treatment.”
Dr. Ngige Supports Victims
Dr. Ngige expressed sadness over the young woman’s death. He promised to cover medical care for all injured victims. Residents reported panic along the road during the attack. Security operatives later secured the area.
Authorities Urge Vigilance
The Anambra State Police Command has not released an official statement. Authorities urged residents to report suspicious activity immediately. Chukwuelobe emphasized that Dr. Ngige and his team remain committed to protecting his staff and the public.
This incident underscores the need for stronger security measures in Anambra State and highlights the risks public officials and civilians face along busy roads.
