UNIPORT Student Murder: Damian Okoligwe Sentenced to Death

On October 20, 2023, Damian Okoligwe killed Justina Otuene, a 300-level Biochemistry student, inside his apartment in Mgbuosimini, Obio-Akpor LGA.

Prosecutors said he dismembered her body and tried to dispose of it in a wheelbarrow before police arrested him.

Justice Chinwe Nsirirm-Nwosu confirmed that the prosecution proved all elements of the murder beyond a reasonable doubt.

Judge Condemns the Murder as Chilling

The judge described Okoligwe’s actions as intentional, calculated, and coordinated. She noted that witness testimonies and exhibits clearly supported the charges.

She then ordered:

“Okoligwe shall be hanged by the neck until confirmed dead.”

Family Responds to Verdict

Outside court, prosecution counsel Charles Mbaba praised the judgment. He said it delivered justice for Justina and her family.

Mbaba emphasized:

“This verdict will deter youths from believing shortcuts in life provide quick wealth.”

Justina’s brother, Osatawaji Otuene, said the family finally experienced closure:

“It’s a relief that my sister didn’t die for nothing. The judgment was deserved.”

High-Profile Case Shocks Community

The case outraged the university community and the public. Authorities and citizens followed the trial closely, making it one of the most high-profile murder cases in Rivers State in recent years.

While Okoligwe’s lawyer declined to comment, the family expressed relief and sorrow, thanking the court for a thorough and decisive ruling.
