Russia announced that it is considering a full ban on WhatsApp. The government accused the platform of failing to curb criminal activity. Authorities are also encouraging citizens to switch to state-backed digital services.
Meta Pushes Back
Meta, the U.S. tech giant that owns WhatsApp, responded. It said Russia wants to block the app because it “refuses to comply with government attempts to undermine people’s right to secure communication.”
Previous Restrictions on WhatsApp
Since August, Russia has already banned voice calls on WhatsApp. This move is part of a wider crackdown on Western-owned social media platforms. Critics argue that the measures aim to push Russians toward domestic alternatives.
Roskomnadzor’s Warning
Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, claimed that WhatsApp is being used “to prepare and carry out terrorist acts, conduct fraud, and commit other crimes against our citizens.” The agency warned that the messaging service could face a total ban if it does not comply with Russian regulations.
