The US–Nigeria security partnership progressed on Sunday as National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu hosted a United States Congressional delegation in Abuja. Additionally, the visit forms part of ongoing cooperation aimed at strengthening defense and intelligence support.
Ribadu explained that the meeting followed earlier engagements in Washington, DC, where shared security concerns were discussed. Consequently, US lawmakers arrived on a fact-finding mission to review progress and expand collaboration.

US–Nigeria Security Priorities Strengthened
Furthermore, Ribadu noted that US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, attended the meeting. He said the ambassador’s presence reflects the importance both nations attach to the partnership.
According to Ribadu, discussions covered counter-terrorism support, regional stability, and strategic cooperation. As a result, he expressed optimism that the dialogue would deepen trust and reinforce peace across the region.
Diplomatic Pressure Remains Despite Progress
However, the meeting occurred amid diplomatic tension after US President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. The Federal Government, nevertheless, rejected the claim, insisting insecurity affects all citizens regardless of religion.
Even so, Nigeria continues to engage global partners for security support. On November 20, Ribadu met US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon to discuss coordinated strategies to address ongoing threats
