The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the Nnamdi Kanu transfer request seeking his move from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to Abuja. The IPOB leader asked to be transferred to Kuje or Nasarawa to support his appeal.
Kanu filed the request through the Legal Aid Council. He argued that staying closer to the Federal Capital Territory would enable easier access to lawyers and court proceedings.
Judge Insists on Proper Hearing
However, Justice James Omotosho refused the ex parte application. He ruled that the court must hear from all parties before making a decision. The judge ordered Kanu to convert the request into a motion on notice and serve the respondents.
The case will continue on January 27, 2026.
Background to the Nnamdi Kanu Transfer Issue
Kanu is serving a life sentence delivered on November 20, 2025. The conviction followed terrorism-related charges. Authorities moved him to the Sokoto facility immediately after sentencing.
Previous Appearance Attempt Blocked
Last week, the court also stopped Kanu’s younger brother from speaking for him. Prince Emmanuel attempted to represent him but is not a lawyer. The judge declined the request.
The court’s latest decision means the Nnamdi Kanu transfer battle will proceed only through proper legal channels.
