The U.S. House of Representatives passed a controversial bill on December 17, 2025. This legislation criminalizes gender-affirming medical care for minors. Sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the measure targets procedures like surgeries and hormone treatments.
Bill Details
Congress passed the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, or H.R. 3492, which prevents doctors from giving minors puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries that change the body for the purpose of a gender transition. Violators face fines and up to 10 years in prison. However exceptions apply for treatments addressing physical conditions like congenital defects.
Voting Results
The House passed the bill with 216-211 votes in favor of it. Three Democrats supported this legislation alongside Republicans. Four other Republicans did not support this legislation.
Supporters’ Perspectives
Advocates of the bill state it secures children from irrevocable damage. They argue gender-affirming care entails experimental procedures which children cannot give full-informed consent for. Another reason cited by those who support the bill is the potential for regrets among the patients.
Opponents’ Concerns
Critics condemn the legislation as an attack on transgender youth. They say it denies access to essential, evidence based care that reduces suicide risks. Furthermore groups like the ACLU warn it criminalizes doctors and harms families.
Next Steps
The bill now heads to the Senate. Experts predict slim chances of passage there due to Democratic opposition. Nevertheless this vote marks the first national congressional action on banning such care. It fuels ongoing debates about youth autonomy and medical ethics.
