Festive Season: FCCPC Cautions Road Transporters Over Fare Hikes

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has cautioned inter-city road transport operators against imposing arbitrary fare hikes during the festive season. The warning follows a surge in consumer complaints across several parts of the country.

The commission acknowledged that the yuletide period often comes with increased travel demand. It also recognised that operators face higher operational pressures during this time. However, it stressed that passengers remain entitled to fairness and transparency in pricing.

According to the FCCPC, fare adjustments may be allowed where justified. Nonetheless, operators must clearly communicate any changes before travel. Sudden or unexplained increases, the commission said, are unacceptable.

Complaints Rise as Festive Travel Peaks

The FCCPC said it has received reports from multiple states alleging sharp fare increases at motor parks. Many passengers complained that operators failed to give prior notice or reasonable explanations.

The commission noted that these complaints emerged amid reports of reduced petrol pump prices in parts of the country. Although fuel cost represents only one factor in transport pricing, the FCCPC said unexplained hikes raise valid concerns.

It warned that fare increases lacking transparency may amount to exploitation. This risk becomes higher during peak travel periods when passengers have limited alternatives.

FCCPC Intensifies Market Monitoring

Reacting to the situation, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Mr Tunji Bello, said the commission has stepped up monitoring nationwide. He explained that the agency is engaging transport unions, park managers, and operators.

According to Bello, the FCCPC will closely observe market conduct throughout the festive season. He added that the commission will respond swiftly to verified complaints from consumers.

Bello stressed that while the FCCPC does not fix transport fares, it will act against unfair practices. He said the commission will not tolerate misleading pricing or exploitative conduct.

Passengers Asked to Stay Alert

The FCCPC advised travellers to confirm fares before boarding vehicles. It urged passengers to avoid operators who refuse to provide clear pricing information.

The commission also encouraged the public to report suspicious or exploitative practices through official channels. As Nigerians travel for Christmas and New Year celebrations, the FCCPC reaffirmed its commitment to consumer protection.

It assured citizens that festive travel should not become an avenue for exploitation.
