Abia State Governor Alex Otti has explained why he will not defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. Otti spoke on Tuesday during his monthly media chat in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
According to the governor, Obi informed him of his decision to leave the Labour Party. However, Otti said he chose to remain because of his commitment to rebuilding the party.
Labour Party Gave Me the Platform – Otti
Otti said he joined the Labour Party before Peter Obi and did not enter the party through him. He stressed that the party provided him with the platform to become governor and deserved his loyalty.
“That is the party that brought me to power,” Otti said. “I will remain in the Labour Party and continue the struggle to rescue and reposition it.”
Defection Not an Option for Now
The governor added that discussions about alternative political alignments could only come after the party stabilises. For now, he insisted that defecting to another party remains off the table.
Moreover, Otti said his focus remains firmly on governance and delivering results for the people of Abia State.
Response to Calls to Join APC
Reacting to calls by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urging him to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), Otti said he would not allow such calls to distract him.
Quoting former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Otti said leaders must stay focused on their destination rather than respond to every provocation.
Focus on Governance
In conclusion, Otti said his administration remains committed to serving the people of Abia State. He stressed that performance, discipline, and focus would guide his political decisions.
