Imo State Governor and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma, says governors from the region have agreed to support President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
He made the statement on Friday during a New Year courtesy visit to Abia State Governor Alex Otti at his residence in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
Decision Anchored on Regional Cooperation
According to Uzodinma, the decision followed consultations among South-East governors. As a result, the leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation and accelerate development across the region.
“As Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, I engage my colleagues, share ideas, and agree on how best to improve the welfare of our people,” he said.
In addition, Uzodinma said the visit allowed him to extend New Year greetings to Governor Otti and acknowledge his governance efforts.
Uzodinma Responds to Political Speculation
Meanwhile, Uzodinma addressed the political interpretations surrounding the visit. He explained that meetings between elected officials often attract speculation.
“When two politicians meet, people naturally see politics in it,” he noted. However, he stressed that the engagement focused on unity, dialogue, and governance.
Tinubu’s Policies Drive Support
Uzodinma also dismissed claims that the political activities of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could weaken Tinubu’s chances in 2027. Instead, he described Tinubu as a national leader whose policies on economic reform, security, and social intervention are beginning to yield results.
“President Tinubu has implemented policies that are producing results,” Uzodinma said. Therefore, he added, leaders in the South-East have resolved to support him.
South-East Reaffirms Commitment to Unity
Furthermore, the Imo governor said the South-East has chosen to move away from divisive politics and adopt a broader national outlook.
“The South-East is an integral part of Nigeria,” he said. “Consequently, we remain committed to a united and progressive country.”
Uzodinma also urged the media to report political developments responsibly, noting that political communication in the region requires care and accuracy.
Otti Describes Visit as Brotherly
Earlier, Abia State Governor Alex Otti described Uzodinma’s visit as a brotherly engagement rather than a political meeting. He stressed the importance of cooperation among all levels of government, regardless of party affiliation.
“Government is one. You cannot oppose a system you are part of,” Otti said.
He thanked Uzodinma for the visit and prayed for continued peace and development in Imo State and the wider South-East. The visit comes amid increasing consultations and political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
