Ibrahim Namadi Kano State Transport Commissioner Resigns Amid Drug Baron Bail Controversy

Ibrahim Namadi, the Commissioner for Transportation in Kano State, has tendered his resignation due to his contentious involvement in acting as a surety for suspected drug kingpin, Sulaiman Danwawu.

Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, the Kano State Commissioner for Transportation, has officially stepped down from his role, just hours after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf received the findings of an investigative panel probing his alleged involvement in the release of a suspected drug trafficker, Sulaiman Danwawu.

Namadi’s resignation was confirmed through an official statement issued on Wednesday by the Director General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sanusi Bature DawakinTofa.

In the statement, Namadi clarified that his decision to resign was made in consideration of the public interest and the gravity of the allegations surrounding his connection to the controversial bail arrangement. He emphasized that his resignation was a personal and ethical decision, aimed at safeguarding the integrity and public trust in the administration he served.

“As someone who has been a dedicated member of an administration that has consistently taken a strong stance against the sale, use, and spread of illicit drugs, I feel morally compelled to take this painful but necessary step,” the statement quoted him as saying.

While maintaining his innocence in the matter, Namadi acknowledged that public perception and the preservation of the administration’s core values must take precedence over personal concerns.

“Although I strongly believe in my innocence, I cannot ignore the importance of accountability, the expectations of the people, and the trust placed in this administration. My resignation reflects my commitment to upholding the values we have worked tirelessly to promote in Kano State,” he added.

Statement from Ibrahim Namadi

Namadi went on to express his deep gratitude to Governor Abba Yusuf for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet. He reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the vision of the government and to the broader goals of transparency, discipline, and good governance.

“I remain committed to the ideals that brought this administration into office,” he stated. “Even outside public office, I will continue to contribute to the development of our dear state and the betterment of society.”

Following the resignation, Governor Yusuf accepted Namadi’s decision and extended his appreciation for the former commissioner’s service. The governor also conveyed his best wishes for Namadi’s future endeavors, while using the occasion to reinforce his administration’s firm resolve in combating drug-related crimes and other social vices that negatively impact the youth and wider society.

According to the statement from DawakinTofa, the governor also urged all political appointees and public officials to exercise discretion, especially when dealing with sensitive issues, and to always consult higher authorities before taking actions that could affect public trust or government integrity.

When did Ibrahim Namadi resign?

The resignation follows shortly after the receipt of a detailed report from a committee set up to investigate Namadi’s alleged role in securing bail for Sulaiman Danwawu, a man suspected of involvement in drug trafficking activities. The report was formally presented to the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, by the chairman of the committee, Aminu Hussain, who also serves as the Governor’s Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters.

According to findings from the panel, the investigation was thorough, transparent, and guided by evidence. The report concluded that the commissioner failed to exercise proper judgment when he voluntarily acted as a surety for Danwawu, allegedly without conducting adequate due diligence or seeking appropriate authorization from higher authorities.

Sources revealed that the committee held Namadi accountable for what it deemed as negligence on his part, which contributed to the controversial release of the suspect. This finding was a key factor in prompting both his resignation and the swift response from the state government.

The incident has stirred public discourse around accountability and the responsibilities of political office holders in sensitive legal and criminal matters. Governor Yusuf has since reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for actions that undermine justice, compromise public safety, or contradict the moral values of Kano State.
