Rotimi Amaechi has set a ₦600 per litre petrol price as his condition for backing President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Amaechi is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate. He said he would withdraw from the ADC ticket if petrol falls to that price.
Amaechi made the statement during an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday. He was reacting to Tinubu’s Independence Day address. The President had said Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity.” However, Amaechi questioned whether Nigerians could feel the impact of the government’s economic reforms.
“It is about believability; who do you believe?” Amaechi asked.
He also pointed to rising transport costs and prices.
“Has any price come down, has anything changed?” he asked.
According to him, Nigerians should judge the government by changes they can see in their daily lives.
Amaechi then used petrol prices as a clear test of Tinubu’s economic claims. He said he would personally visit a filling station to check the price.
“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel, I will go myself,” he said.
He added,
“If fuel comes down to 600, I will campaign for Tinubu.”
The statement places a specific condition on Amaechi’s possible support for Tinubu in 2027. For now, Amaechi remains on the ADC ticket. His comments also highlight petrol prices and living costs as major issues in Nigeria’s political debate.
