US President Donald Trump has warned Democrats against launching another impeachment effort against him.
He said such a move could destroy the Democratic Party. His comments followed a major Republican defeat in the November 2026 midterm elections.
Trump made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking to reporters at the White House.
Asked whether he feared impeachment after Democrats took control of Congress, he dismissed the possibility.
“Not even a little bit. I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did that,” Trump said.
He questioned the grounds for another impeachment attempt. He also defended his administration’s performance.
“Impeachment for no reason, what for having a successful country? Our country is more successful now than at any time in its history,” he added.
Democrats take control of Congress
The midterm results handed Democrats control of both chambers of the US Congress.
The party secured major gains in the House of Representatives and Senate. This marks the first time during Trump’s second presidency that Democrats will control both chambers.
The new Congress will take office in January 2027. Democrats are expected to use their committee powers to investigate the Trump administration.
Their oversight could cover the president, his family and members of his administration. They could also challenge his policies through congressional hearings and legislation.
Trump has faced impeachment twice
Trump has already been impeached twice during his political career.
The Democratic-controlled House first impeached him in December 2019. The case centred on his dealings with Ukraine and allegations involving Joe Biden’s family.
The Senate later acquitted him.
In January 2021, the House impeached Trump again. This followed the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.
The Senate again acquitted him, allowing him to remain in office until the end of his first term.
Democrats divided over another impeachment
Democratic leaders have not publicly committed to another impeachment effort.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries previously said the party had neither ruled out nor ruled in the possibility.
Representative Jamie Raskin also described impeachment as one of several tools available to Democrats.
However, some party figures have expressed reservations. Senator Sherrod Brown said during his campaign that he would not support another impeachment.
Meanwhile, California Representative Robert Garcia signalled plans for greater scrutiny. He posted “LAWYER UP” following the Democrats’ election victory.
The new congressional majority could therefore pursue investigations without immediately moving to impeach Trump.
For now, Trump’s warning has added another layer to the political tensions ahead of the Democrats’ return to control of Congress.
