Newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans for a tax cut and carried out a major cabinet reshuffle as he begins his premiership.
Burnham, who officially became prime minister after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, said his government would focus on reducing the tax burden, rebuilding Britain’s industrial base, decentralising power and ending rough sleeping.
He took office following the departure of Sir Keir Starmer.
Burnham Moves Quickly to Reshape Government
The new prime minister acted swiftly to establish his authority by removing several key figures from the previous administration.
Among those dismissed were former Chancellor Rachel Reeves and former Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, while other ministers were reassigned and several Burnham allies were promoted to senior cabinet positions.
The shakeup signals a clear break from the previous Labour leadership as Burnham begins implementing his policy agenda.
Focus on Economy and Homelessness
Burnham pledged to re-industrialise Britain, decentralise political power, and eliminate rough sleeping across the country.
The announcement of a tax cut formed part of his broader economic plan aimed at easing financial pressure on households while boosting long-term growth.
International Congratulations
French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Burnham on becoming prime minister and called for closer cooperation between Britain and Europe.
Macron urged Burnham to “give new momentum to the partnership” with the European Union.
