The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of shifting its attention from governance to preparations for the 2027 general election.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the allegation during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired by Channels Television. He argued that the ruling party had failed to focus on resolving Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
Abdullahi faults APC over priorities
According to Abdullahi, discussions by APC leaders now revolve mainly around the next general election instead of addressing the country’s immediate concerns.
“If you listen to them, they have only one problem today; the only problem they have as far as they are concerned is the 2027 election.”
He continued:
“When you listen to them, that’s what they talk about as if they are in opposition, as if their mandate has ended, as if they don’t have a duty to solve the problems that the country is confronted with.”
Abdullahi said Nigerians expected the government to focus on improving security, reducing economic hardship and delivering better governance.
ADC promises different subsidy approach
The ADC spokesman also criticised the Federal Government’s implementation of the fuel subsidy removal policy. He argued that the approach had increased hardship for many Nigerians.
“We say that this removal of subsidy, the manner the government has gone about it, is wrong. ADC will not do it the same way.”
He said the opposition party would review the subsidy policy if it wins power. According to him, the party would prioritise measures that reduce the economic burden on citizens.
“Our immediate concern is how do we ease the burden on the people.”
Abdullahi added that the ADC intends to present Nigerians with an alternative style of governance. He said the party would focus on improving living conditions instead of concentrating on electoral politics.
What happens next?
The remarks are expected to fuel further exchanges between the APC and the ADC as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election gather momentum. The ruling party is yet to respond publicly to Abdullahi’s latest comments, while both parties continue positioning themselves for the next electoral contest.
