Governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform have rejected parallel political structures ahead of the 2027 election. They fear such alliances could weaken the party and hurt President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The position comes as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike pushes the Rainbow Coalition. The coalition has already sparked fresh tension within the APC. Some party leaders reportedly fear it could split votes and create confusion among voters. The political battle is already visible in Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River states.
Progressive Governors Forum chairman, Hope Uzodimma, announced the governors’ position on Monday night. He spoke after a closed-door meeting at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. Wike recently accused Uzodimma of backing political attacks against him. However, Uzodimma said the governors would focus only on APC candidates.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.
He added that the governors would not support candidates outside the APC.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate,” he said.
Uzodimma also stressed that the party’s campaign structure would support Tinubu and other APC candidates.
“The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates,” he added.
The latest position could deepen the political clash between the APC leadership and Wike’s coalition as 2027.
