Apple Introduces iOS 27 at WWDC 2026
Apple has officially announced iOS 27 during its WWDC 2026 event. The new operating system introduces major artificial intelligence features, faster performance, and deeper Siri integration.
The launch comes at a time when millions of users face device compatibility changes. In addition, WhatsApp has ended support for several older iPhone models that can no longer handle updated software systems.
iOS 27 Focuses on AI and Speed
Unlike iOS 26, which focused mainly on interface redesign through the Liquid Glass design, iOS 27 shifts attention to performance and intelligence.
Apple has positioned the update around speed improvements and AI-driven features. Furthermore, the company says the system improves everyday tasks across apps.
The biggest upgrade comes with Siri, which has been rebuilt using Google’s Gemini technology following a partnership between both companies.
According to Apple, the new Siri understands personal context across Messages, Mail, and Photos. It also performs actions across multiple apps with improved accuracy.
In addition, Siri now supports more natural conversations, better voice control, and a standalone app experience.
Beta Release and Launch Timeline
Apple released the first developer beta on June 8, according to TechCabal. Meanwhile, the public beta is expected in July.
The final version is expected to launch in September alongside the next iPhone lineup.
iPhones That Will Support iOS 27
Apple confirmed that all devices currently running iOS 26 will also support iOS 27.
This means iPhone 11 series and newer models remain eligible for the update.
Supported devices include:
- iPhone 11 series
- iPhone 12 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 15 series
- iPhone 16 series
- iPhone 17 lineup
However, Apple will drop support for iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and older models.
Limited Access to AI Features
Although many devices will receive the update, not all users will access the full AI experience.
Apple confirmed that advanced AI features require iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or newer devices.
These features depend on the A17 Pro chip and at least 8GB of RAM.
As a result, users with standard iPhone 11 to iPhone 15 models will receive design and performance upgrades but will not access the full Apple Intelligence suite.
Key Features in iOS 27
Apple highlighted several new features in the update, including:
- Faster app launch speeds
- Improved battery optimisation
- AI-powered photo editing tools
- Smarter Spotlight and Mail search
- Enhanced parental controls
- Faster AirDrop transfers
- Liquid Glass customisation options
- New Health and wellness tracking features
Additionally, Safari receives better tab organisation, while Shortcuts now supports natural language commands.
Experts Advise Caution on Beta Installation
Apple has warned users that the developer beta may remain unstable.
Issues such as overheating, battery drain, app crashes, and banking app failures have been reported in early builds.
Therefore, experts advise most users to wait for the public beta or final release.
Users who depend on mobile banking or work-related apps are especially encouraged to avoid early installation.
WhatsApp Ends Support for Older iPhones
The iOS 27 rollout coincides with WhatsApp’s decision to drop support for older iPhones.
Devices that cannot run newer iOS versions will lose access to updates and eventually the app itself.
This shift is expected to affect users who still rely on older iPhone models.
Industry Impact and User Upgrade Pressure
The combined rollout of iOS 27 and WhatsApp’s compatibility changes places renewed pressure on users to upgrade devices.
For many users, the latest update cycle may determine whether continued use of older iPhones remains viable in the long term.
