A 38-year-old man has been arrested near Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, just days before the US president’s scheduled visit for a Republican fundraising event.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department identified the suspect as Jeanine John Taele. Investigators said he was seen walking around Trump National Golf Course, taking photographs and videos. He also appeared to be observing security arrangements ahead of the president’s arrival.
The arrest took place on Sunday after plainclothes federal agents reported suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
During a search, officers found Taele carrying a concealed firearm magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition. A search of his parked vehicle uncovered a loaded handgun and another loaded magazine containing hollow-point rounds.
Authorities also discovered that Taele was wanted in connection with a robbery investigation being conducted by the El Segundo Police Department. He has been charged with carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited armour-piercing or restricted ammunition.
Following the arrest, investigators from the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau searched the suspect’s home in Downey, California.
Officials said the search was conducted because of the “potential security implications” surrounding the incident. Investigators reported finding an illegally modified AR-style rifle, a .45-calibre pistol, body armour, high-capacity magazines, large quantities of ammunition and notebooks containing what they described as “concerning statements.”
The investigation is continuing with assistance from the US Secret Service, and authorities say additional charges could follow. Despite the discoveries, officials stressed they have not identified any credible threat to the wider public.
The sheriff’s department said the case highlights the importance of cooperation between local, state and federal law enforcement in identifying suspicious activity before it escalates.
President Trump arrived in California on Tuesday to attend a Republican fundraising dinner at the golf course. The White House said he is also expected to deliver remarks criticising California Governor Gavin Newsom. He is widely viewed as a potential candidate in the 2028 US presidential election.
Trump is scheduled to travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday before continuing campaign-related events ahead of the November midterm elections.
The president has survived multiple assassination attempts in recent years. This has led US security agencies to strengthen protective measures around his public appearances.
Authorities have not alleged that Taele intended to harm the president. Also, no charges related to threats against Trump have been filed.
