Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his decision to retire from international football, bringing his 23-year career with Portugal to an end after the November international break.

The 41-year-old forward confirmed the decision in a video message shared on his social media accounts on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

Ronaldo will leave Portugal as the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 146 goals in 234 international appearances. He also holds the record for the most appearances in men’s international football.

In his farewell message, the former Portugal captain said he would hand back the national team’s iconic number seven shirt.

“The time has come to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team. I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it,” he said.

Ronaldo Reflects on 23-Year Portugal Career

Ronaldo made his international debut in August 2003. He went on to represent Portugal in six FIFA World Cups and six European Championships.

His biggest achievement came in 2016 when he captained Portugal to its first European Championship title.

Portugal also won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025 during his international career.

The Al-Nassr forward thanked his teammates, coaches, family and supporters for their contributions throughout his journey.

He said representing Portugal had given him unforgettable experiences and allowed him to connect with millions of supporters.

Ronaldo added that football meant more than goals, records and trophies because of the emotions it created among people.

Retirement Follows Disagreement With Portugal Coach

Ronaldo’s announcement comes weeks after a disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.

The dispute reportedly followed Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. Ronaldo warmed up during the match but did not enter the pitch.

He later accused Jesus of breaking an agreement that would have allowed him to play for 30 minutes.

Ronaldo subsequently left Portugal’s training camp before the team’s match against Denmark. The Portuguese Football Federation opened disciplinary proceedings and suspended him.

The forward later apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters for leaving the camp. He also said he would accept any punishment from the federation.

Portugal Loses Its Most Prolific Goalscorer

Ronaldo’s retirement marks the end of one of the longest and most successful international careers in men’s football.

His 146 goals remain a men’s international record. His 234 appearances also place him at the top of the all-time appearance list.

The forward previously admitted that he considered leaving international football after the 2026 World Cup. However, he initially decided to continue representing Portugal.

In his latest message, Ronaldo described the retirement decision as emotional and difficult.

He thanked Portuguese supporters for standing behind him throughout his career and reflected on the memories they shared.

“Portugal will always be in me. Forever,” he said.

His departure closes a remarkable chapter in Portuguese football as the national team prepares for life without its most celebrated goalscorer.
