Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has recalled goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Charlton Athletic confirmed on Monday that the 24-year-old goalkeeper has been called up for Nigeria’s September fixtures. Okonkwo has made only two senior appearances for the Super Eagles, however, he kept clean sheets in both matches.
The goalkeeper started Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on May 26. Four days later, he played in the final as Nigeria defeated Jamaica.
Okonkwo had limited work against Zimbabwe but produced an important save after the break when the Warriors threatened. He also looked composed against Jamaica and made a low second-half save to help Nigeria maintain their advantage.
His latest call-up presents a bigger challenge, as Nigeria prepare for competitive AFCON qualifiers rather than an invitational tournament. CAF has confirmed that Nigeria will host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau four days later.
Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is another experienced option who has featured in previous squads under Chelle.
Okonkwo, meanwhile, brings his own credentials after coming through Arsenal’s academy. He spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz before becoming an important goalkeeper for Wrexham. The goalkeeper joined Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan this summer and has already made four appearances for the club. Chelle’s selection therefore creates an intriguing battle for the goalkeeper’s position.
