Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been urged to keep Feyenoord compact when they face Barcelona in their Champions League clash at Camp Nou.
The Feyenoord manager is preparing his team for a landmark trip to Barcelona, with the fixture set to be only the third official meeting between the clubs. Van Bronckhorst is looking forward to returning to the famous stadium, where he enjoyed a successful spell as a Barcelona player.
“We now have four days to prepare for our first Champions League match”, Van Bronckhorst said.
“We’re looking forward to facing Barca and putting on a great performance at Camp Nou”.
However, Feyenoord legend Wim Rijsbergen has warned against taking an overly aggressive approach in Barcelona. Rijsbergen recalled Feyenoord’s previous visit to Camp Nou in 1974, when he featured in a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona.
Speaking ahead of Feyenoord’s latest trip, Rijsbergen advised Van Bronckhorst to avoid pressing too high at Camp Nou.
“We had played in big stadiums, but Barcelona had an even bigger one”, Rijsbergen recalled.
“The really big names just got an extra kick. Nowadays, managers want to press high, but that doesn’t seem wise. It will have to be compact”.
Van Bronckhorst will also return to a stadium where he enjoyed considerable success during his playing career.
