Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has demanded accountability over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Niger State.
The victims died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). They were arrested during enforcement operations around M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto on September 15 and 16.
In a Friday post, Atiku described the deaths as deeply disturbing. He said the victims were sons, fathers, brothers and loved ones. He added that the state had a duty to protect them while in custody.
“No Nigerian should enter government custody and lose the most basic right of all: the right to life,” Atiku said.
Atiku also welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the NSCDC commandant in Niger State. The government also ordered a full investigation into the incident.
However, Atiku said the suspension should only be the beginning. He wants an independent, thorough and transparent investigation. He also called for the findings to be made public.
According to him, anyone found responsible through “action, abuse or negligence” must face full accountability.
“The families of the deceased deserve more than condolences. They deserve the truth. They deserve justice. And Nigerians deserve the assurance that custody by the state will never become a death sentence,” he said.
Meanwhile, authorities have started medical examinations and autopsies to establish what caused the deaths. The NSCDC has also opened an investigation into the detention conditions and medical care provided to the suspects.
The actual cause of death remains unconfirmed. Reports of overcrowding and poor ventilation have emerged, but officials say investigations must establish the facts.
Atiku expressed condolences to the families and prayed for strength and comfort. He also urged authorities to establish the truth without delay.
