Atiku says Oyo rescue coincided with APC’s 2027 campaign launch

Oyo rescue

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State. However, he questioned the timing of their release, saying it coincided with the launch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign activities ahead of the 2027 election.

Atiku made the remarks in a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu. He described the victims’ release as a huge relief but said the development raised concerns about the government’s priorities.

Atiku praises troops, criticises government

The former vice president commended the Nigerian military and other security agencies for securing the victims’ freedom after weeks in captivity.

“The rescue of innocent schoolchildren from the hands of terrorists is a victory for our gallant troops and a source of hope for every Nigerian family. They deserve the gratitude of the nation.”

Atiku, however, accused the Federal Government of focusing on politics instead of tackling insecurity.

He argued that the administration should have concentrated on rescuing the victims before launching activities linked to the 2027 election.

“No serious government should be consumed by the politics of re-election while innocent schoolchildren have remained in the custody of kidnappers for weeks.”

“The first campaign of any responsible administration must be the campaign to rescue its citizens, restore security and reassure anxious families. Politics can wait; the lives of innocent children cannot.”

He added:

“Yesterday should have been dedicated to the war room, not the campaign room.”

Atiku calls for stronger leadership

The former vice president said the office of the Commander-in-Chief carries both constitutional and moral responsibilities.

“The commander-in-chief is more than a constitutional title; it is a moral responsibility.”

He said Nigerians expect the President to show visible leadership during periods of insecurity and national emergencies.

“Leadership is not exercised only behind closed doors; it must also be seen, heard and felt by both the citizens and those who threaten them.”

What happens next?

The rescue has continued to attract reactions from political leaders and other stakeholders. Meanwhile, security agencies are investigating the kidnapping, while public debate over security and governance remains active.
