The Federal University of Technology, Babura, Jigawa State, has announced a 100 per cent tuition waiver for newly admitted students of B.Sc Mathematics and B.Sc Physics.
The university said the initiative will make science education more accessible. It also aims to address the shortage of skilled professionals in science-related fields. The announcement came in a statement signed by the university Registrar, Mrs Fatima Muhammad, and made available to journalists on Wednesday.
University Approves Free Tuition For Two Programmes
According to the statement, the waiver covers tuition and other school fees for students admitted into the two programmes. The waiver will remain in place throughout the duration of their studies.
The management said the decision forms part of its efforts to encourage more young Nigerians to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEMM). Nigeria continues to face a shortage of skilled professionals in these fields. The university said the new policy will help tackle the gap while making science education more affordable.
“To address this gap, the Management of the Federal University of Technology, Babura has approved a waiver of school fees for candidates admitted into the B.Sc Mathematics and B.Sc Physics programmes,” the statement read.
The university also expects the policy to increase enrolment in core science courses. Such courses often attract fewer students despite their importance to technology and innovation.
Who Can Benefit From The Free Tuition?
The university said eligible students in the two programmes will enjoy a 100 per cent waiver of tuition and school fees. The waiver covers the full duration of their studies at the institution.
Mrs Muhammad described the initiative as a community service programme aimed at making science education more accessible to students. She said the policy would particularly benefit students from northern Nigeria and other underserved communities.
“Beneficiaries will enjoy 100% waiver of tuition and school fees,” the registrar stated.
The university hopes the initiative will encourage more young Nigerians to study Mathematics and Physics. Both subjects play an important role in research, technology and industrial development.
Candidates Can Change Course And Institution
Meanwhile, candidates who initially selected other programmes or institutions may still benefit from the scheme. However, they must meet the university’s admission requirements before they can qualify. The registrar advised interested candidates to change their institution and course to the Federal University of Technology, Babura through any JAMB CBT centre.
“Interested and eligible candidates are advised to effect a change of institution and course to FUT, Babura at any JAMB CBT Centre,” she said.
The university also advised prospective students to contact its admissions office for further information. The office will provide guidance on eligibility, course changes and other admission requirements.
Free Tuition Takes Effect For Current Admission Cycle
The management said the initiative aligns with efforts to strengthen STEMM education and produce more graduates for research, teaching and industry. It also expects the policy to help Nigeria develop a stronger workforce in critical science fields. However, prospective students should confirm their eligibility with the university before changing their JAMB choices.
The university urged qualified candidates to take advantage of the opportunity, adding that the tuition waiver takes effect for the current admission cycle.
