Australia secured a place in the World Cup Round of 32 after playing out a goalless draw with Paraguay in San Francisco.
The Socceroos only needed a point to finish as Group D runners-up, while Paraguay’s fourth point of the tournament leaves them in a strong position to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Australia created the better chances in the first half, with Jackson Irvine and Cristian Volpato both testing Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Paraguay improved after the break, but neither side could find the breakthrough in a cautious contest.
The result sends Australia into the knockout stage, where they will face the runners-up from the group containing Egypt, Iran and Belgium on 3 July. Paraguay are currently on course to meet Group E winners Germany if they qualify.
Australia continue their World Cup journey, while Paraguay now wait for results in other groups to confirm their place in the last 32.
