Turkey end United States’ unbeaten run

Turkey claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over the United States, scoring with the final kick of the match despite already being eliminated from the FIFA World Cup.

The hosts took the lead after just three minutes when Celtic defender Auston Trusty fired home from an unmarked position at a corner. Turkey responded through Arda Guler, who scored his side’s first goal of the tournament, before Orkun Kokcu completed the comeback with a well-worked team move before half-time.

The United States fought back after the break, with Sebastian Berhalter equalising from long range. Christian Pulisic came close to finding a winner, but Turkey goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir produced a series of crucial saves. Deep into stoppage time, Kaan Ayhan bundled home the winning goal after Can Uzun’s touch inside the box.

Although Turkey finished bottom of the group and were already out of the competition, the victory ended a difficult campaign on a positive note. The United States had already secured top spot in the group and will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on 2 July.

Turkey leave the tournament with pride restored, while the United States shift their focus to the knockout stage.
