Government confirms deaths in Kankia as forces record earlier success against armed group
The Katsina State Government has confirmed the killing of 11 residents in a retaliatory attack by bandits in Kankia Local Government Area.
The incident followed a security operation that earlier targeted the same armed group.
Attack Occurred in Two Phases
Commissioner for Internal Security, Nasir Mu’azu, said the events unfolded on May 2, 2026.
Security agencies received intelligence about a suspected bandit leader, Mohammadu Fulani, moving with armed men toward key locations in Kankia.
The Divisional Police Officer led a joint security team to intercept the group.
Security Forces Record Initial Victory
The operation led to a fierce gun battle.
Security operatives neutralised several bandits during the encounter.
They also recovered eight motorcycles and rustled cattle, which are now in police custody.
Authorities described the outcome as a major success in the fight against banditry.
Reprisal Attack Leaves 11 Dead
Hours after the clash, the bandits regrouped and launched a revenge attack.
The assault targeted Gwalgoro Village in the Gyaza/Kunduru area of Kankia.
The attack occurred around midday and left 11 residents dead.
Government Condemns Violence
The state government condemned the killings and described them as a cowardly act.
Officials extended condolences to the victims’ families.
They also assured residents that efforts are ongoing to bring the attackers to justice.
Call for Public Support
The government reaffirmed its commitment under Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to strengthen security operations.
It urged residents to support law enforcement agencies with timely information.
Authorities said community intelligence remains vital to preventing future attacks.
