The Benue government denies knowledge of Obi’s visit to Makurdi following reports that political thugs blocked his entourage on Tuesday.
The clarification came after Peter Obi’s media team alleged that thugs intercepted his convoy along Boko Road. Consequently, the team claimed the blockade prevented the political leader from accessing parts of the state capital.
However, speaking on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia, Chief Press Secretary Sir Tersoo Kula dismissed the allegations. Furthermore, he emphasized that the state government had no hand in the incident.
Government refutes state involvement in blockade
Specifically, Kula maintained that the Benue government denies knowledge of Obi’s visit because the campaign team failed to provide prior official notification.
Additionally, he stated that Governor Alia’s administration does not deploy thugs or illegal groups for any purpose. Therefore, he urged the public to disregard claims linking the state to the reported blockade.
“We wish to emphatically deny that the government of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has any idea of what Mr. Obi is talking about,” Kula stated.
Moreover, he noted that high-profile political figures normally notify local security agencies before traveling. Consequently, proper coordination ensures safety and smooth passage during public engagements.
Spokesperson urges focus on internal party issues
Rather than blaming state officials, Kula suggested that any logistical friction stemmed from internal party matters.
“It is curious that an individual presenting himself as a presidential candidate could arrive without informing relevant security authorities,” he added.
Furthermore, he advised political actors to refrain from dragging the state government into private campaign disputes.
Finally, the administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order. Thus, the government assured all citizens that Benue remains open to peaceful and properly coordinated visits.
