The Federal Government has opened applications for a six month teacher certification program designed to train degree and diploma holders for formal entry into the teaching profession.
Organized under the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in partnership with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the conversion program targets graduates holding Bachelor of Science (BSc), Higher National Diploma (HND), and National Diploma (ND) qualifications who lack professional education training.
Consequently, the initiative aims to boost the number of qualified educators across basic and secondary schools nationwide while standardizing professional teaching qualifications.
Eligibility and entry requirements
To qualify for the six-month teacher certification scheme, applicants must possess recognized tertiary qualifications from accredited Nigerian or international institutions.
Specifically, candidates holding BSc, HND, or ND certificates in non-education disciplines are eligible to enroll for the professional conversion training.
Furthermore, applicants must submit standard identity documents, academic transcripts, and First School Leaving Certificates during the online registration process.
Step-by-step application process
First, interested candidates must apply online through the official NTI portal. Applicants must create a profile using a valid email address and phone number.
Next, candidates must generate a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) code. Therefore, this code enables payment of the mandatory processing fee via online banking or bank branches.
After payment, applicants must upload scanned copies of their academic credentials and passport photographs. Afterwards, candidates should print their confirmation slips for physical verification at designated state centers.
Flexible learning structure and professional registration
Furthermore, the six-month teacher certification curriculum combines weekend contacts, online modules, and teaching practice.
This flexible structure allows working professionals to complete training without interrupting their daily schedules. Thus, participants can easily balance employment and professional development.
Upon successful completion, participants receive recognized Postgraduate Diplomas in Education (PGDE) or NCE equivalents.
Finally, graduates become eligible for immediate registration and licensing by the TRCN. As a result, they gain official status as certified teachers in Nigeria.
