The Labour Party has unveiled Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Konto will run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke. The party said the ticket reflects competence, integrity and national inclusion.
Party explains nomination
Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, announced the nomination in Abuja on Saturday.
He said the party reached the decision after consulting key stakeholders. According to him, Konto has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, humanitarian work and community development.
Asogwa said she retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in several leadership positions. One of her roles was Community and Government Liaison Officer.
Party highlights Konto’s experience
The Labour Party said Konto coordinated humanitarian programmes for internally displaced persons and vulnerable communities in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
It added that she is a trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist. She also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health.
The party said Konto currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. She is also the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
According to the Labour Party, Konto speaks English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura. It added that she has worked with government agencies, traditional institutions and civil society groups on health, nutrition, WASH and humanitarian programmes.
Labour Party outlines agenda
The party said Konto’s nomination reflects its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and competent leadership.
“With Hajja Konto, the ticket brings compassion, administrative experience and a clear grasp of Nigeria’s development challenges, especially for women, children and communities affected by insecurity.”
The Labour Party also described the Okereke-Konto ticket as people-centred. It said the team would focus on rebuilding the economy, strengthening public institutions, improving security and restoring hope.
What happens next?
The Labour Party is expected to begin broader consultations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election. The party also plans to promote the Okereke-Konto ticket across the country as preparations for the polls continue.
