Chinese authorities have arrested a local government official and a businessman accused of sexually assaulting a woman during a business gathering in Hangzhou, with the case triggering widespread anger over alleged abuses of power and China’s drinking-table culture.
The woman was allegedly assaulted at a karaoke venue after attending an official company dinner involving executives from several companies and government officials, according to local authorities.
An investigation found that the woman had allegedly been sexually assaulted by both men. Authorities also said one of the suspects pushed her to the ground, leaving her with injuries to her lower back. Both men have since been arrested and removed from their positions, authorities said.
The case has attracted particular attention because one of the suspects was a government official while the other was a business executive linked to a state-owned company. Their alleged involvement has intensified concerns that workplace hierarchies and social obligations surrounding business gatherings can create opportunities for abuse.
The incident has also reignited debate over China’s so-called “drinking table culture”. One in which alcohol and social drinking can play a significant role in business and professional relationships. Reports that the woman had been encouraged to drink heavily before allegedly being taken to the karaoke venue have further fuelled the public reaction.
Major Public Discussion
The case quickly became a major topic on Chinese social media. On Wednesday, the story appeared among seven of Weibo’s top 50 trending topics .One related topic accumulated more than 68 million views. While several other discussions attracted between one and six million views.
Many users focused on the distinction between participating in a social or business gathering and consenting to sexual activity.
“Going to a drinks gathering does not mean consenting to be harmed, and drinking alcohol does not mean voluntarily consenting to abuse,” one Weibo user wrote.
Others questioned the wider social expectations placed on women at business drinking events.
“What is the rationale behind having women accompany men in drinking? Hopefully this practice can be eliminated,” another comment said.
The public reaction has gone beyond calls for the individual suspects to face punishment. Some commentators argue that the incident exposes broader problems in the way business relationships are conducted.
A commentary published by China Women’s News argued that dealing with the two individuals alone would not be enough. It called for institutional measures to establish clearer boundaries around business interactions. And also reduce situations where professional obligations, social pressure and unequal power relationships become intertwined.
The case has therefore become about more than the allegations against two individuals. It has also raised questions about how workplace power, alcohol-fuelled socialising and expectations surrounding business relationships can create an environment in which misconduct is difficult to challenge.
Authorities have not indicated what charges the two suspects will face or when the investigation will be concluded.
