Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was leaked on X, attracting over two million views before removal. Here’s how fans reacted and Universal responded.
Christopher Nolan wanted fans to enjoy The Odyssey on the biggest cinema screens. Instead, millions watched a leaked copy on X. The surprise leak quickly became one of the hottest topics online.
According to Variety, a high-quality version of the movie gathered 2.1 million views in just two and a half hours. The account that shared it was later suspended.
Many social media users reacted with shock and jokes. One user wrote,
“The full Odyssey movie in a tweet, as Nolan intended.”
Another said,
“The whole Odyssey film in an embedded video on Twitter. Crazy.”
A different user added,
“Someone leaked The Odyssey movie in HD. I thought it was fake but it’s true.”
The comments spread almost as fast as the movie itself.
Meanwhile, Nolan made history with the film. The Odyssey is the first cinema release shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras. The three-hour movie was created for giant IMAX screens to give viewers the best experience possible.
However, The Hollywood Reporter said another lower-quality version also appeared on X on Sunday. That copy stayed online for about two hours before it was removed. It reportedly attracted almost 50,000 views.
Universal Pictures moved quickly after discovering the leak. The studio said,
“We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”
Despite the online leak, the movie continues to perform strongly at the box office. It earned $215 million worldwide in its second weekend. That pushed its total earnings to an impressive $640 million.
