Flamingos Face Brazil in U-17 World Cup Semi-Final, Chase Historic Final Spot

Nigeria’s Flamingos will face Brazil on Wednesday as they chase their first-ever appearance in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final.

The semi-final presents a major opportunity for the young Nigerian side to make history in Morocco. However, they must overcome an unbeaten Brazilian team to secure their place in Saturday’s final.

Coach Akeem Busari’s side reached the last four after defeating Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals. Captain Azeezat Oduntan scored the decisive penalty in the 89th minute.

The victory marked Nigeria’s second semi-final appearance in the competition. The Flamingos previously reached this stage in 2022, finishing third in India.

Flamingos Draw Confidence From North Korea Victory

Nigeria’s campaign has gathered momentum despite a difficult opening match. The team recovered from its initial defeat to secure victories over Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea, Mexico and Venezuela.

Their 3-1 victory over North Korea stood out as one of the tournament’s biggest results. The Flamingos followed that performance with a 2-1 win over Mexico in the round of 16.

Goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho has also played an important role in Nigeria’s progress. She has recorded 16 saves and delivered impressive performances against Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Meanwhile, top scorer Oluebube Umejiaku believes the team can reach the final.

“Having come this far, all we want is to win the cup, and that means we must beat Brazil,” she said.

She added that the players had worked hard to reach the semi-finals and would do everything possible to qualify for the final.

Busari also described the semi-final as an important moment for his team.

“Reaching the semifinals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement, and I’m looking forward to it because I want to make my country proud,” the coach said.

Brazil Present Tough Challenge for Nigeria

Brazil enter the encounter unbeaten in Morocco and have shown considerable attacking strength throughout the competition.

The South Americans began with a 6-2 victory over Canada. They subsequently recorded 3-3 draws against Ghana and Poland before defeating China PR to reach the semi-finals.

Brazil’s attacking threat includes Greise Kelly, who has contributed to eight of the team’s 17 goals. Her contribution includes five assists, the highest tally recorded by any player at the tournament.

Brazil coach Rilany Silva expects a difficult contest against Nigeria. She acknowledged the Flamingos’ physical strength and ability to maintain their intensity throughout matches.

“I’m expecting an extremely difficult match. Nigeria are a very physical team. By the 90th minute, they’ll probably still be running as if it were the fifth,” she said.

She added that Brazil would need a strategic approach to break down Nigeria’s defence.
