The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed knew Peter Obi was a “packaged fraud” before joining him on the 2023 presidential ticket.
Sowore made the allegation while reacting to recent comments by Baba-Ahmed about Obi, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other politicians seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. Baba-Ahmed, who served as Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, reportedly said the politicians could not provide the solutions Nigeria needs.
Sowore attacks Datti over Obi comments
Reacting to the remarks, Sowore accused Baba-Ahmed of having firsthand knowledge of Obi from their time together on the Labour Party ticket.
“He knew Peter Obi, whom he deputised, was a packaged fraud. That needs no repeating; he just revealed what he knew up close,” Sowore wrote in a post on his X account.
The AAC candidate argued that Baba-Ahmed’s recent comments about Obi were consistent with what he claimed to have observed during the 2023 election.
Sowore recalls 2023 Peace Accord
Sowore said he sat beside Baba-Ahmed during the event and watched his interaction with President Bola Tinubu.
“I sat next to Datti in 2023 at the Peace Accord signing and watched him fawning over Tinubu,” he said.
According to Sowore, he raised concerns about the relationship at the time. He alleged that Obi and Baba-Ahmed were working in Tinubu’s interest. He said supporters of the Labour Party candidates rejected his claims during the 2023 election period.
Sowore now argues that Baba-Ahmed’s latest comments have vindicated his earlier position.
“Their followers couldn’t handle the truth then. Now they know better,” he said.
He also urged Nigerians to carefully consider their choices ahead of the 2027 general election.
Datti had criticised Obi and other politicians
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks came during a recent interview in which he assessed politicians preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election. He reportedly said none of the current contenders, including Obi and Atiku, could significantly improve Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed also discussed Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party and join the African Democratic Congress platform. He said Obi had left his “comfort zone” despite his advice.
The comments have since triggered reactions from several political figures, including Sowore and Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo.
Sowore’s latest remarks have further intensified the political exchanges among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
