At least six people have died after a five-storey residential building collapsed in Delhi, with more students feared trapped under the rubble.
The building, known as Hostel Daze, collapsed around on Sunday in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of south-west Delhi. Eyewitnesses told local media that between 20 and 40 people may have been inside when the building came down.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed six deaths on Monday. Six other people were also rescued from the rubble were receiving treatment at the hospital.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said around 80% of the debris had been cleared by Monday morning. Continuing, she said only rubble from the basement remained and confirmed that 12 people had been recovered so far.
“Six have died, while the other six are in stable condition,” Gupta said.
She added that authorities were in contact with the victims’ families and were working to ensure the rescued students received proper medical care. Officials, however, have not confirmed how many people remain trapped.
The Delhi Police have registered a case against the building’s owner and launched a search for him. An adjacent building was evacuated as a precaution, while local reports said it was due to be demolished.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of student accommodation in Satya Niketan, a densely populated area near Delhi University’s South Campus. Meanwhile, rescue teams continue to search the remaining rubble for anyone still trapped.
