Seriake Dickson, founder and national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says concerns that recently generated tension within the party have been amicably resolved following a closed-door meeting with Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate.
In a post on X on Friday, Dickson disclosed that the meeting, which lasted about three hours, was attended by Obi, Victor Umeh, and other senior leaders of the party, including Pat Utomi, professor of political economy.
The meeting comes amid recent disagreements within the NDC over party supremacy, the role of support groups, and complaints arising from the party’s primaries.
According to Dickson, the discussions focused on reviewing the activities of the party and addressing issues that had become sources of concern to members.
“I just received my brother, colleague, and partner in the New Nigerian Project, His Excellency Mr Peter Gregory Obi, CON, our presidential candidate, who, together with some distinguished leaders of our party, held a closed-door meeting which lasted about three hours,” he said.
“In the course of that meeting, we reviewed the activities of our party and discussed a few recent issues that have been a source of concern to all sides, and we amicably resolved all the issues.”
REMOVING THE APC
The former Bayelsa governor said both leaders remain united in their commitment to the party’s broader objective of winning the 2027 elections to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We have always been on the same page on the bigger picture, that is, winning the elections for all candidates of our party and rescuing Nigeria from the misgovernance of the APC-led government,” he said.
“However, a few issues have arisen, and we have agreed on how to handle them moving forward.”
Dickson used the opportunity to appeal to party members to end internal disputes and focus on strengthening the party ahead of future electoral contests.
“I want to use this opportunity again to call on all members of our party to stop the bickering and name-calling and focus on the bigger picture,” he said.
He assured members that consultations among party leaders would continue to ensure unity and cohesion within the NDC.
“Both His Excellency Peter Obi and I, as well as other leaders and stakeholders of our party, will continue to consult and engage with one another to address and resolve concerns, strengthen the unity and cohesion of our party, and ensure that we remain focused on our shared mission of rescuing Nigeria and building a better future for all,” he said.
