United States begin 2026 World Cup with record victory

The United States opened their home World Cup campaign with a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

The USA delivered one of the most impressive performances of the opening round, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in their Group D clash on Saturday. An own goal, a brace from Folarin Balogun, and a late strike from Gio Reyna secured the victory, while Maurício scored Paraguay’s only goal.

The result marked the most goals the United States has ever scored in a World Cup match and their biggest World Cup win since 1930. Christian Pulisic and Balogun both left the match early after contributing to the scoring.

Playing in front of a packed home crowd, Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed confidence and attacking quality from the opening whistle. The performance has strengthened belief that the USA can be serious contenders on home soil.

The emphatic win gives the United States an ideal start to their World Cup campaign and sends an early warning to the rest of the tournament.
