Former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke has alleged that some Nigerian politicians resort to human sacrifice in their quest for political power.
Duke made the claim on Tuesday in Abuja. He spoke when the Council of the Wise of the Savannah Centre for Democracy, Diplomacy and Development visited him.
The council was led by former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola. Its visit came ahead of the 2027 general election.
Duke, who is the 2027 presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party, said Nigerian politics had become a “do-or-die” affair. He also said politics had changed from a vocation into an occupation. According to him, the desperation for power has reached disturbing levels.
“Some do all sorts of things, even using human sacrifice and all that, because they’re seeking power. Let’s ask ourselves, how long are we going to go before we get it right?”
Duke Recalls Cross River Incident
The former governor also recalled an incident from his time in office. He said authorities allegedly found human body parts in a local government chairman’s residence.
Duke did not name the politician involved. He also did not link the allegation to any political party. The claim has not been independently established.
The former governor warned that political desperation could increase tension ahead of the 2027 elections. He said such desperation could also trigger violence.
Duke argued that Nigeria must stop treating elections as a do-or-die contest. Instead, he said politicians should respect the choice of voters. He called for fundamental reforms to the country’s electoral system. In particular, he demanded changes to the process of appointing members of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to Duke, Nigeria needs an electoral commission that can operate independently. He said the commission must also conduct elections without undue political influence.
He further called for tougher sanctions against electoral violence. Such measures, he said, could discourage politicians and their supporters from intimidating voters.
Ariwoola Warns Presidential Candidates
Ariwoola also urged presidential candidates to approach the 2027 election with restraint. He warned politicians against actions that could deepen divisions in the country.
The former Chief Justice asked candidates to avoid rancour and hate speech. He also urged them to stay away from inflammatory rhetoric. Ariwoola further called on presidential candidates and their supporters to follow the rules of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Duke’s comments have since generated reactions because of the serious nature of his allegation. However, he did not provide evidence to establish that any politician currently uses human sacrifice to win elections.
His remarks have also renewed concerns about political desperation ahead of 2027. The former governor said Nigeria must strengthen its electoral system and punish those who promote violence.
With political activities already increasing, stakeholders face growing pressure to ensure that the next election remains peaceful and credible.
