The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has dismissed more than 40 personnel over alleged corruption and financial malpractice in the past two and a half to three years.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with media executives and journalists. According to Olukoyede, more than five of the affected personnel are currently facing prosecution, while case files involving other former staff members are being prepared for possible prosecution.
He said the dismissals formed part of the commission’s efforts to maintain high standards of integrity among personnel.
“In the past two and a half years or three years of my service, I have asked them to dismiss over 40 staff on account of corruption and financial malpractice,” Olukoyede said.
“More than five of them are being prosecuted at the moment. You can follow those cases in court; they are public knowledge.
EFCC Introduces Stricter Gift Policy
Olukoyede said the commission had introduced additional measures to strengthen accountability among its personnel. This includes a new policy regulating the acceptance and declaration of gifts.
Under the policy, EFCC officials will be required to declare gifts above a specified value, including gifts received from relatives living abroad. The commission will determine the categories and monetary value of gifts that personnel can accept.
Olukoyede said the measure was intended to ensure that EFCC officials could explain their sources of income. As well as maintain standards of living consistent with their legitimate means.
He warned that personnel of an anti-corruption agency could not effectively fight corruption while participating in corrupt practices themselves.
“If you are fighting corruption and you are corrupt yourself, you cannot effectively fight corruption,” he said.
EFCC Renames Internal Affairs Department
The EFCC chairman also disclosed that the commission had renamed its former Department of Internal Affairs as the Department of Ethics and Integrity.
He said the change was part of wider efforts to strengthen ethical standards and internal accountability within the agency.
The department is expected to play a role in ensuring that personnel remain subject to appropriate ethical and disciplinary standards.
