Enugu Air Joins AFRAA as 50th Member, Eyes Bigger Routes

Enugu Air has joined the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) as its 50th member. The move is a major boost for the young Nigerian airline.

AFRAA announced the membership in Nairobi on Wednesday. The association represents over 85 percent of Africa’s international airline traffic. AFRAA Secretary General, Abdérahmane Berthé, welcomed the airline into the group.

“We are delighted to welcome Enugu Air into the AFRAA fraternity,” he said.

He also promised support for its IOSA certification and future growth.

Meanwhile, Enugu Air CEO, Capt Tolu Ita, called the membership a major milestone.

“We are honoured to join the AFRAA fraternity,” Ita said.

He added that the move supports the airline’s focus on safe and affordable air travel. The airline also plans to work with other AFRAA members as it expands.

Founded on July 7, 2025, Enugu Air operates Embraer E170, E190 and E195 aircraft. The airline is based in Enugu and operates from Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Currently, it connects nine Nigerian destinations. These include Enugu, Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Benin City. Going forward, Enugu Air plans more domestic routes. It also hopes to launch African, European and other international routes later.

AFRAA’s latest move highlights Nigeria’s growing role in African aviation. Nigeria has a huge population and a rapidly expanding economy. Therefore, stronger airlines could improve travel within the country and across Africa. AFRAA was founded in Accra, Ghana, in 1968. Today, it is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Its goal is to support African airlines and promote better air connectivity.

With Enugu Air now on board, the airline gets a bigger platform for its ambitious growth plans.
