The European Parliament has called on the Nigerian government to strengthen security and protect Christian communities following renewed attacks in parts of the country.
Lawmakers expressed concern over the security situation in the Middle Belt, especially Plateau State. They urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to stop violent attacks and bring those responsible to justice.
Lawmakers pass resolution
A total of 501 lawmakers voted in support of the resolution. Only one member voted against it, while 86 lawmakers abstained.
The Parliament said the worsening security situation requires urgent action. It called on Nigerian authorities to improve security, protect vulnerable communities and prosecute those behind the attacks.
The lawmakers also expressed concern over repeated attacks on communities in Plateau State in recent months.
Parliament cites Plateau attack
The resolution referred to the June 22 attack on Kawel village in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to the lawmakers, armed attackers killed more than 20 Christians during the night raid. The victims included a pastor.
The Parliament urged Nigerian authorities to intensify operations against Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other armed groups operating across the country.
It also called for independent investigations into violent attacks. In addition, it urged the government to end impunity, strengthen civilian protection, improve early warning systems and invest in conflict prevention.
Lawmaker raises concern
Slovak lawmaker Miriam Lexmann described the killings in Kawel as another example of the violence affecting Christian communities in Nigeria.
“The horrific attacks in Kawel village where innocent Christians including their pastor were brutally killed is yet another tragic reminder of escalating violence against Christians in communities in Nigeria.”
She added:
“Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Nigeria has become one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian.”
What happens next?
The European Parliament expects Nigerian authorities to strengthen security in affected communities and investigate recent attacks. The resolution also increases international attention on the country’s efforts to tackle insecurity and protect vulnerable populations.
