No fewer than five persons lost their lives on Thursday in a fatal road accident along the Iyana Egbado section of the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash also left 10 other passengers with varying degrees of injuries.
Bus Carrying 20 Passengers Crashes
The accident involved a white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD 809 XC.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the vehicle carried 20 passengers when the crash occurred around 11:12 a.m.
FRSC spokesperson in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said the passengers included six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children.
Five Victims Lose Their Lives
Furthermore, Odunsi disclosed that the crash claimed the lives of five passengers.
The deceased included one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child.
He added that 10 passengers sustained injuries, while five others escaped without injuries.
“The crash occurred at about 11:12 a.m. and FRSC rescue operatives arrived at the scene within five minutes,” Odunsi said.
FRSC Blames Speeding, Overloading
Meanwhile, preliminary investigations linked the accident to excessive speeding and overloading.
Odunsi explained that the road remained motorable despite cloudy weather conditions at the time of the incident.
He said rescue officials moved injured victims to General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori, for treatment.
Authorities also deposited the bodies of the deceased at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
FRSC Warns Motorists Against Traffic Violations
Reacting to the incident, Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims.
In addition, he warned motorists against speeding, overloading, and other traffic offences.
Ogunjobi urged drivers to obey traffic regulations and prioritise safety on the roads, especially during the festive period.
He stressed that road safety requires collective responsibility from all road users.
