At least five miners were killed and two others injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Saturday.
The attack occurred around 1pm amid heightened tension in parts of the state, according to Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM).
Tengwong confirmed that five people died while two others sustained injuries in the attack. He condemned the violence and called on security agencies to strengthen protection for communities in the area and prevent further attacks.
A community member, Simon Mundat, also confirmed the deaths, describing the incident as devastating. He appealed to the authorities to improve security so residents can continue their legitimate activities without fear.
The identities of the attackers were not immediately established, and the motive for the attack remained unclear at the time of reporting.
Spokespersons for Operation Enduring Peace and the Plateau State Police Command, Captain Polycarp Oteh and SP Alabo Alfred, respectively, did not respond to inquiries before publication.
