Tragic accident claims four lives in Kano
Four people have been confirmed dead after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Kano State.
The accident happened on Tuesday evening in Danbatta Local Government Area.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday.
Public Relations Officer of the agency, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi, said the crash occurred at about 7:10 p.m.
Vehicle crashed into dam during trip
According to the fire service, the vehicle was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State.
However, the Golf Wagon crashed into Tomas Dam during the journey.
The vehicle carried no known registration number at the time of the incident.
Authorities said 10 people were involved in the crash.
A resident identified as Suleman reportedly alerted emergency responders after the accident.
As a result, firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Service Division quickly moved to the scene.
Firefighters rescued victims from wreckage
Emergency responders successfully pulled out all victims from the vehicle.
However, four of the passengers were rescued unconscious.
Sadly, medical personnel later confirmed them dead.
The deceased included Shamsiya Miko, believed to be about 35 years old.
Another victim was identified as Fatima Danlami, aged about 40.
Meanwhile, authorities had yet to confirm the identities of two other victims at the time of the report.
Burst tyre blamed for crash
Preliminary investigations pointed to a burst tyre as the likely cause of the accident.
Abdullahi said the agency responded immediately after receiving the distress call.
All victims were evacuated to Danbatta General Hospital.
There, medical teams provided treatment and handled necessary procedures.
Fire Service urges safer driving
Following the tragedy, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged motorists to drive carefully.
He advised drivers to remain cautious, especially on highways and roads close to waterways.
According to him, responsible driving can help reduce avoidable road deaths.
In addition, he called on relevant authorities to repair the Tomas Dam embankment.
He said urgent repairs could help prevent similar accidents and protect lives and property.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the incident.
