A boat carrying eight people overturned at Dudduru Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Wednesday afternoon, leaving four teenage girls dead.
The passengers were reportedly travelling from Kwadige Village to Chai Chai Sabuwa Market when the incident occurred at about 4pm on September 23, 2026. The Jigawa State Command of the NSCDC confirmed the deaths in a statement released on Thursday.
Initial findings indicated that strong winds may have caused the boat to capsize, according to the agency. The deceased were named as 13-year-old Hasiya Mu’azu, 13-year-old Hauwa Lawan, 12-year-old Fatima Lawan and 13-year-old Dawsiyya Lawan. The remaining four passengers survived after farmers near the pond pulled them to safety. Residents of Kwadige and the neighbouring Kuna communities also took part in the rescue and recovery operation.
The NSCDC said the victims’ remains were subsequently buried in line with Islamic customs. CC Muhammad Ingawa, the Jigawa State NSCDC Commandant, sympathised with the families of the girls and the wider Kwadige community.
He advised residents who use boats to travel to remain vigilant, especially when strong winds or other dangerous weather conditions develop.
