George Lucas Unveils Inaugural Exhibitions for $1 Billion Lucas Museum Ahead of Opening

Museum Set to Open in Los Angeles

George Lucas has unveiled the first set of exhibitions for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

The museum will open to the public on September 22. It sits in Exposition Park and spans over 300,000 square feet.

The project, valued at $1 billion, features more than 30 galleries and over 100,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Focus Beyond Star Wars

Despite Lucas’s legacy, only one exhibition focuses on Star Wars. That section will display props, costumes, and large-scale vehicle models.

Most exhibitions will explore broader storytelling themes. These include childhood, family, community, and adventure.

The collection features more than 1,200 objects at launch. It draws from a larger archive of over 40,000 works.

Wide Range of Art and Artists

The museum will showcase comics, illustrations, paintings, and photography. It will also include manga and children’s book art.

Featured artists include Norman Rockwell, Jack Kirby, and Alison Bechdel. Classic illustrators like Beatrix Potter and N.C. Wyeth will also appear.

Lucas describes the collection as “the people’s art,” highlighting storytelling across generations.

Design and Vision

Architect Ma Yansong designed the futuristic building. The site includes 11 acres of park space that extends to the roof.

Lucas co-founded the museum with his wife, Mellody Hobson. Together, they aim to celebrate visual storytelling in all forms.

Delays and Leadership Changes

The museum faced several delays before reaching its final opening date. Initial plans targeted 2021, but timelines shifted due to the pandemic.

Leadership changes also affected development. Several senior staff members stepped down or left in recent years.

Lucas now leads the museum’s curatorial direction. He continues to work closely with the team to shape its long-term vision.

A New Cultural Landmark

The Lucas Museum aims to redefine how audiences experience narrative art. It blends traditional and modern storytelling forms under one roof.

Visitors can expect rotating exhibitions that explore culture, history, and imagination through visual media.
