The Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Bissau.
The result handed Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle his first defeat since taking charge of the national team. Guinea-Bissau took control in the 15th minute when Franculino Dju curled an effort into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Nigeria struggled to create a response as the hosts protected their advantage and went into the half-time break ahead.
Chelle made two changes at the interval, introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi as Nigeria searched for a way back into the match. The changes did not produce an immediate turnaround, however, as Guinea-Bissau extended their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé.
Nigeria came close to reducing the deficit late in the game when George Ilenikhena found an opportunity inside the box, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje made a crucial close-range save in the 87th minute. The hosts then sealed the victory deep into stoppage time. Álvaro Djaló scored in the fifth minute of added time to complete the 3-0 win.
The victory moved Guinea-Bissau to six points from their opening two matches after they previously defeated Tanzania 2-0. Nigeria remain on three points following their 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening Group L fixture. The defeat leaves the Super Eagles with work to do in their remaining qualifiers as they seek to strengthen their position in the race for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
