Gunmen have shot dead one person and abducted another along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The attack occurred on Thursday, August 27, at about 5pm around Ojuwo Olijo, according to the Kogi State Police Command.
The police said the armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire at motorists travelling along the highway. A blue Toyota Corolla was subsequently found abandoned on the road, with the body of a man inside. The deceased was identified by the police as Ishaq Yunusa.
Another Occupant Abducted
Police said another occupant of the vehicle was taken into the bush by the attackers during the incident. The development prompted a joint security operation to locate and rescue the abducted victim.
The deceased was taken to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy. Meanwhile, security personnel have intensified operations around the area, with personnel combing the surrounding forests in an effort to locate the abducted victim and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The latest incident adds to security concerns along highways in parts of Kogi State. Especially as motorists and other road users remain vulnerable to attacks and abductions.
